Every now and then you get an idea so potent that it spawns an entire world of ideas within it, the kind of idea you can't stop thinking about even years after you've first dreamed it. For me, that is Free Rock. Named after the pivotal 1960 Ornette Coleman album Free Jazz, every song on here features extended improvisational passages and loose song structures that allowed us as much room to explore as possible. Sparked by a now-lost free jam recorded the day before our primary hard drive crashed, this amalgamation of jazz-rock and psychedelic punk inspires every album that we've made since and will make in the future. This was supposed to be the fifth New Threads album, but it was obvious from day one that we were creating something different here, something completely alien to anything we'd ever done before. If that doesn't earn Free Rock its self-titled status, what does?
